On April 13, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko paid an official visit to Primorye. The head of the Friendly State took part in a working meeting with Governor Oleg Kozhemyako. The main topic of the talks was the cooperation between the Republic and the Territory (Primorsky Krai), implementation of the ongoing projects and new areas of cooperation.
The point in the itinerary of the delegation was the Primorsky Aquarium - a unique place where everyone can learn about the evolution of life in the ocean, the biodiversity of inhabitants of fresh and sea waters of the planet, including the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Sea, Lake Baikal and Lake Khanka, the Amur River. Alexander Lukashenko visited the dolphinarium and watched the show at the Primorsky Aquarium.
The President of Belarus was met by Inessa V. Duyzen, the Acting director of the National Scientific Center of Marine Biology named after A.V. Zhirmunsky, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In December 2021, the A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (the NSCMB FEB RAS), represented by its Acting Director, RAS Corresponding Member Dr. Inessa V. Dyuizen and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea (MABIK), represented by Dr. Wan-Hyun Choi, President of the MABIK, renewed their cooperation under the existing Memorandum of Understanding. Formal collaboration between the organizations began in 2016-2017, when the decision was made to document the relationship and create a joint Laboratory, called “the Marine Joint Laboratory of Biodiversity” (MJLB). As part of the work of the joint Russian-Korean Marine Biodiversity Laboratory, the first field work was carried out on the coast of the Peter the Great Bay on June 23-30, 2019.
With the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and its limitations, the two parties managed to identify promising areas of cooperation for 2022 in an online format and negotiate on an agreement under the existing Memorandum of Understanding which involves sharing experiences in developing best practices, organizing joint scientific events, conferences, colloquiums, symposiums, joint projects and research. So, the next MJLB committee scientific meeting will take place in the near future on the Zoom platform.
Despite the ongoing restrictions due to the COVID-19 epidemic, a group of foreign scientists led by Professor Hwang Ui Wook, the director of the Institute for Phylogenomics and Evolution of the Kyungpook National University, Daegu, Republic of Korea, visited the A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology FEB RAS. The group included three postgraduates who came to see the zoological collections of the museums of the NSCMB FEB RAS, the Federal Scientific Center of the East Asia Terrestrial Biodiversity FEB RAS, and FEFU.
On October 6-8, 2021 an international conference entitled “Marine Biology in the 21st Century: Achievements and Development Outlook” took place in Vladivostok. It was hosted by the A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (NSCMB FEB RAS) and the Primorsky Aquarium – Branch of the NSCMB FEB RAS. Run both in-person and virtually, the event was attended by scientists from various countries — Russia, China, India, Germany, the USA and Canada. Academician Valentin Sergienko, Chairman of FEB RAS, and Academician Andrei Adrianov, Vice President of RAS, gave opening addresses to the conference on behalf of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
On August 26, 2021, an online ceremony was held to sign the Memorandum of Understanding between the A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology FEB RAS and the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), Goa, India. The Memorandum formalizes the intentions of the two parties to cooperate in the field of marine biology and marine ecology and conservation in the Indian Ocean region, Pacific and Arctic regions.
On October 6-8, 2021 the A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences (the NSCMB FEB RAS) and the Primorsky Aquarium – Branch of the NSCMB FEB RAS will jointly hold an international scientific conference in Vladivostok, Russia "Marine Biology in the 21st Century: Achievements and Development Outlook (in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Academician Alexey V. Zhirmunsky)".
The conference will be held to mark the Year of Science and Technology in the Russian Federation (2021), the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) (https://oceandecade.org/) , the 50th anniversary of the Institute of Marine Biology, now called the A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology (2020) (http://www.imb.dvo.ru/index.php/en/we-are-50), and the 5th anniversary of the Primorsky.
On February 26, the A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology and the Primorsky Aquarium carried out an online meeting with their colleagues from the Lotte World Aquarium located in Seoul, the Republic of Korea. It was the first of a series of webinars which are planned to be held with various aquariums across the world.
