Thallus coarse, leathery, bushy, to 50 cm high. Main axis terete or slightly compressed, to 1 cm high bearing 1–3 primary branches (terete at base, compressed above, filiform with smooth surface). Phylloids linear spathulate, 3–5 cm long, 5–10 mm wide, crispate, with obtuse or acute apices, finely toothed at margins, Midrib prominent, vanishing below the apex. Cryptostomata scattered over the surface. Vesicles single or paired, spherical, sometimes elliptical, 3.5–8 mm diam., with smooth surface. Receptacles spinous. Attachment by small discoid holdfast to hard substratum in the subtidal zone.
