Sargassum sanyaense

Thallus coarse, bushy, 60 cm high, yellow brown. Main axis compressed, to 3.5 mm broad. Primary and secondary branches arranged alternately. Phylloids on primary branches spatulate, oblong, to 3.5 cm long, 1.2 cm broad at base, 2–3 cm long, 1 cm broad above, ellipsoid with serrate margins. Phylloids of the secondary branches ellipsoidal, oval, 1.5–2 cm long, 0.7– 1cm broad, with obtuse apices, asymmetric base and serrate margins. Midrib 2/3 of the phylloid length. Visicles spherical, subspherical, obovate with spines or earlike serrate wings on both sides, 3–6 mm diam., on stalk (cylindrical at base and compressed above, 1.5–2 mm long). Cryptostomata elevated, conspicuous, scattered over surface of phylloids and vesicles. Receptacles 5–6 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, subterete at the basal part, compressed above, branched, with spines at the margins, in a cymose glomerulus. Holdfast discoid. Growing on lower intertidal and subtidal hard substrates.
