Ecklonia kurome

Thallus blade-like, thick-coriaceous with rugose surface, 0.3-0.6(-1.0) m high, to 40 cm broad, olive-brown to dark brown in color, flat, wrinkled on the surface, pinnately branched or lobed. Lobes with serrate or toothed margins. Main lamina and lobes are of the same thickness. Stipe solid, cylindrical, slightly compressed towards the base of the blade, to 7 mm in diam., 4-12 cm long. Attachment by robust dichotomously branched rhizoids. Growing below low tide mark (1-2 m) to a depth of ~20 m, on rocks, stons of sheltered and moderately exposed shores.
