Chondria crassicaulis

Thallus erect, bushy, 10-20 cm high. Branching irregular, from all sides, to three orders. Young plants cylindrical, older compressed, 2-3(-5) mm in diam. Branches and branchlets cylindrical to clavate, constricted at the base, with blunt to truncate apices. Branches bearing solitary to four apical branchlets. In transverse section, thallus composed of cortex, 2-3 layers of roundish to irregularly shaped cells, 5-10 mm across, subcortex cells of roundish to oval, increasing toward the medulla, 10-14×20-26 mm; and central medulla of five pericentral cells around axial cell. Sporangia spherical develop near branchlet tips. Attachment by discoid holdfast to low intertidal rocks.
