Chondria dasyphylla

Thallus erect, bushy, 4-10 cm high, soft. Branching irregularly alternate, opposite, from all sides. Main axes cylindrical, 1-1.5 mm diam., bearing branches of the second and thirds orders. The branches become shorter toward the upper portions, showing a pyromidal outline. Branchlets to 4 mm long, 200-600 μm diam., cylindrical to cone-shaped, strongly constricted at base, with blunt tips, or sometimes spindle-shaped with attenuate apices. Apical cell in terminal pit and bearing dichotomously branched trichoblasts. Sporangia spherical, tetrahedrally divided, 40×125(-170) μm diam., forming near branchlet tips. Cystocarps spherical or widely ovoid 400-600(-1000) μm wide, near branchlet tips. Attachment by discoid holdfast. Growing on rocks, in intertidal pools, in sheltered sites.
