Palisada intermedia

Thallus rigid, cartilaginous, caespitose, aggregated, bushy, with several erect axes, 4-8(-20) cm high, purple-red to brownish color, consisting of main axes (1-2 mm diam.) arising from entangled coalesced rhizoidal stolons. Branching irregular, alternate, opposite to subverticillate. Branches covered by short ultimate (cylindric to clavate) branchlets, tapering to basal part. In transverse section, cortex composed radially elongated palisadelike superficial cells and medulla composed of roundish-polygonal cells. Lenticular thickenings in the medullary cell walls absent. Sporangia scattered, oval, ~90 μm across, tetrahedrally divided, and located in the apical part of ultimate branchlets. Cystocarps ovoid, to 850 μm diam., develop on lateral sides of ultimate branchlets. Growing on rocks and stones in the low intertidal and upper subtidal zones.
