Corallina pilulifera

Plant bushy, articulate, heavily calcified, and develops from spacious multilayer crusts. Pinnately branched axes (mainly in one plane), 2-5(-10) cm high, chalky, grayish-violet, pinkish-violet, bleaching to white color. Branching bi- tripinnate, opposite, alternate or sometimes verticillate. Branchlets of the last order pinnate. Segments almost cylindrical or slightly compressed in lower portions, compressed clinoid or trapezium-like in the middle and flattened in the upper portion. In pinnate branchlets, segments closely joined to each other. Terminal segments ylindrical, often ending into swollen whitish tips. Conceptacles immersed in the upper segments, sessile, without horns (antenna), except in the spermatangial conceptacles.Growing mainly on rocks, in tidal pools, in intertidal and upper subtidal. In moderate latitudes, the alga forms bands.
