Chondrus armatus

Thallus bushy, cartilaginous, to 20 cm high, dark purplish-red to faded yellowishorange color. Branching unilateral, alternate or opposite. Branches are linear, compressed or almost cylindrical, 1.5–4 mm broad, straight or tortuosus, gradually tapering to apices. Proliferations unilateral, alternate or opposite, cylindrical, spinose, simple or branched, tapering to apices and constricted at base. Reproductive organs develop in ultimate branchlets and proliferations. Attachment by small holdfast. Growing on rocks, shells, on muddy-sandy bottom in lower intertidal and subtidal of semiprotected and exposed coasts.
