Chondrus pinnulatus

Thallus erect, bushy, tough, cartilaginous, in tufts, 10-20(-40) cm high, dark violet-carmine to reddish- or greenish-yellow. Branching is dichotomous, irregular alternate and pinnate. Main axes terete below, linearclinoid to flat above, 2-5(-7) mm broad, with simple or furcate apices. Apices obtuse or pointed. Branches bear ultimate branchlets on both sides. Ultimate branchlets terete to flat, simple or furcate, linear or ligulate, to 7 mm long, with obtuse or acute tips. Attachment by small, discoid holdfast. Tetrasporangia and gonimoblasts develop in ultimate branchlets. Tetrasporangia 20-30×27-40 mm. Gonimoblasts roundish or oval, prominent on both sides, to 1.5×2.0 mm Growing on rocks and stones, low intertidal to subtidal, in open and semi-sheltered areas.
