Chondrus yendoi

Thallus cartilaginous, thick-leathery, bushy, in tufts, 1–15(–30) cm high, dark purplish-red to greenish-yellow in old parts of thalli. Blades obovoid, ear-shaped, simple or closely dichotomously branched (up to four times), cuneate at the base. Margins entire or with prolifications. In cross section, cortex composed of outer (small, roundish cells) and inner layer (roundish or stellate cells). Medulla of loosely arranged filaments composed of long cylindrical cells to 5 mm broad. Tetrasporangia in sori. Cystocarps large, 1–2 mm across, roundish, prominent on both sides of the thallus. Attachment by discoid holdfast. Growing on rocks in lower intertidal of exposed shores.
