Grateloupia divaricata

Thallus firmly cartilaginous, bushy, branched, 15–20(–30) cm high, greenish-yellow to purplish-red. Disc-shaped attachment giving rise to one or some erect branches 1–3 mm broad Main axes and branches flattened to terete, tapering to the base and apices. Branching dichotomous, narrow dichotomous, tufted or lateral, bifurcate near the apices. Branches develop from all sides or distichously. Laterals numerous, divaricate, spindle-shaped, short or long (2–10 mm long), often branched, flattened, distichous, closely alternate, tapering to the base and apices. Tetraspores cruciate, oval, 25×50 mm, develop from inner cortical cells. Growing on low intertidal and upper subtidal rocks exposed to moderate and strong wave action.

Note: This species is used as food. A source of agglutinin.
