Grateloupia turuturu

Thallus blade-like, soft, mucilaginous, entire or divided into linear-lanceolate blades, 15-50 cm high, 5-10 cm width, dark pinkish-violet, yellowish-brown color slightly lightened towards apices. Blade with widelycuneate base tapering into short stalk. Thallus smooth-edged, undulate or with small proliferations. Attachment by small disc-like holdfast. Tetrasporangia imbedded in the cortical layer, 20x25 μm, scattered over the thallus. Gonimoblasts also imbedded and scattered over the thallus. Growing on rocks, stones, pebbles in low intertidal, upper subtidal, at sites exposed to moderate wave action. Dwells at sites with bright light and in shaded rocky grottoes and niches.
