Scinaia japonica

Thallus bushy, 10–20 cm high, firm gelatinous, purple-redish with pinkish young upper portions. Branching regular repeatedly (~8–10 times) dichotomous with narrow axils. Branches composed of soft cylindrical segments, sometimes constricted at joints, 2–3 mm diam., slightly compressed at dichotomies, and tapering to apices in the uppermost segments. The uppermost segments bifurcate with blunt apices. In transverse section, epidermis composed of colorless utricles and hypodermis of 2(–3) rows of densely pigmented, closely packed cells and fine colorless rhizoidal filaments; medulla composed of long colorless dichotomously branched filaments. Attachment by small discoid holdfast. Growing on rocks in the lower intertidal zone.
