Lomentaria hakodatensis

Thallus soft, gelatinous, bushy, (3-)10-15 cm high, violet-carmine, yellowishpink to greenish, cylindrical to compressed, hollow, consisting of creeping axes and erect tufts of entangled branches. Branching irregular bipinnate, with branches arranged closely alternately, oppositely or verticillately. Branches of the same order longer at basal portion and becoming shorter to apices and giving to erect axes of pyramidal outlines. Branches covered by ultimate (determinate) branchlets slightly constricted at base and with acuminate tips. Tetrasporangia in groups, spherical, 70-100(-140) μm diam., tetrahedrally divided, develop in swollen ultimate branchlets. Cystocarps conical to urceolate, rostrate, 320-350×330-380 μm diam. Growing in rocky pools and crevices, in lower intertidal, at sites exposed to moderate and strong wave action.Note: Source of sulfated polysaccarides.
